E-commerce product photography- The complete guide

What is the biggest disadvantage of buying a product online? The consumer cannot touch, feel, hear, or smell the product. He can just view it on screen. In the case of physical retail stores, the consumer can see and try the product in person before they make their final purchasing decision.

Considering the above facts, we can say that the solution lies in providing high-quality photos that give a fair idea about the product specifications. Brands and e-commerce products should provide sleek and polished photographs that highlight even the smallest detail of the products. Further, the online store should maintain consistency and quality in uploading pictures. They should be of the same size, quality such that the online store looks professional and upmarket.

Stock photography- An overview

Stock photographs are image banks posted online, of the products that the consumers want to buy. By buying stock photographs, the e-commerce portals saves time and effort, since these images are compatible with web requirements and the businesses do not have to set up a separate photo studio for shooting product photographs.

Traditional photography, however, fails to capture pictures that highlight the vivid details. In that case, a professional photographer is hired, who again, charges whooping amounts of money.

So the option left with e-commerce businesses is to conduct photography themselves.

Let’s make a list of product we require for product photography shoots:

  1. Table
  2. White background or other suitable backdrop settings
  3. Camera
  4. Lighting
  5. Tripod stand
  6. Umbrellas/bounce cards
  7. Image editing software for post-processing

 

So why select a white background?

The answer here is simple. White not just looks divine and adds value to the product in question; it erases distractions. White sweeps are special backgrounds, which curve in the back and give a professional look for the image. They minimize and prevent unwanted shadows thus making the product look more attractive and prominent. You can shoot photos and videos of the product. Make sure you use a good quality camera which captures pictures in high resolution. A DSLR is perfect while some people like using smartphones with high picture quality.

You also require a tripod stand as the pictures that are clicked will be sturdy and clear. You can eliminate the camera ’shake’ using the tripod. You can shoot multiple photos that too, at 360-degree angle, giving a complete and detailed description of all the angles of the product.

And yes, the correct light effect. Without correct lighting, it is impossible to get great pictures. Try placing the product near the window so that you get natural light exposure. Be careful as direct sunlight sometimes blurs the picture.

Image editing software is necessary for the post-production phase to eliminate errors and enhance the picture quality.

Wrap-up

Once the shoot is complete, get your images tagged and cataloged. Prepare the products and the equipment well in advance. You should be comfortable in operating your camera and have a good command over its functions. Be sure to include close-up views and high resolution of your images.
